Hiring a handyman in Houston should be simple. You describe the problem, someone shows up, and it gets fixed. In practice, a lot of people end up with a half-finished patch, a crew that stops answering, or a repair that fails after the next heavy rain. Asking a few direct questions before you book fixes most of that.
1. What exactly will you do, and what is not included?
Ask for the scope in plain words. “Fix the bathroom door” could mean re-hanging it, replacing the hardware, or planing and painting the edge. A good handyman tells you what the job involves and what would be a separate charge, such as hauling away old material or painting after a drywall patch.
2. Have you done this kind of work before?
Handymen are generalists, but everyone has strengths. Ask for examples of the same job: a drywall patch, a fence gate, a ceiling fan swap, a door install. Photos of finished work tell you more than a sales pitch.
3. Where is your line on electrical and plumbing?
Texas does not issue a general handyman license, but electrical and plumbing work generally has to be done by a licensed electrician or plumber. A trustworthy handyman will swap a light fixture or a faucet and tell you honestly when a job is past that line and needs a licensed trade. If someone says they can do anything, that is a warning sign.
4. How do you price the job?
Ask whether the price is fixed or hourly, and what could change it. Small jobs are often priced as a flat number after the handyman sees the work. For larger jobs, ask for the number in writing, including materials.
5. Who buys the materials?
Either answer can be fine, but you should know up front. If the handyman buys materials, ask for receipts. If you buy them, ask for a shopping list so you do not make three trips to the hardware store.
6. Will the same person who quotes also do the work?
This matters more than people think. When one person looks at the problem and a different person shows up to fix it, details get lost. Ask who will be at your house.
7. What happens if something fails after you leave?
Houston is hard on homes. Heat, humidity and soil movement find every weak patch. Ask what the handyman does if a repair fails in the first few weeks. A fair answer is that they come back and look at it.
8. How will you leave the space?
Cleanup is part of the job. Drywall dust, paint drips and cut-off trim should not be your problem when the work is done. Ask how they handle it, and walk through the finished work together before you pay.
Red flags
- A large deposit demanded before any work or materials.
- No clear way to reach the person after the job.
- Pressure to decide today on a price that was not written down.
- A quote that never mentions what is excluded.
Small jobs add up
Many Houston homeowners wait until three or four small things pile up: a sticking door, a stained ceiling, a loose rail, a cracked caulk line in the bath. Handling them in one visit is usually cheaper in time and in trips than fixing them one by one. Take photos, make a list, and ask for it all to be quoted together.
